Cheltenham & Aintree season openers…

‘Jumps steps up further this week with the first meetings of the main season at both Cheltenham and Aintree whilst there is still life left on the flat with good cards from Doncaster and Newbury. There will be again plenty of the winter jumping types making returns and respective debuts.

The weather forecast for the coming week indicates that after the extremes of Sunday conditions are generally more settled in the opening days with some rain expected towards the weekend.

We get the new week underway with an extended eight race card at Plumpton. The going is currently on the softer side of Good. Also on Monday there is a Listed race at Pontefract which could be of interest. Two jump meetings on Tuesday. A decent looking card at Exeter and some five hundred miles north we have an extra and now final meeting of the year at Perth. This extra meeting is in aid of local charities. The going at Perth is presently Heavy and all race distances are generally extended by around half a furlong.

There was to be a Wednesday meeting at Worcester but they were forced to abandon early as the adjacent River Severn has burst its banks and the course is now unraceable. Leaving us with two relatively modest cards at Fontwell and the additional fixture from Southwell. Two meetings on Thursday from Carlisle and Ludlow.

We then move into three consecutive days of high quality action. Friday brings the opening day of the Showcase meeting at Cheltenham with a two mile Handicap Chase and a Grade Two Novices’ Hurdle being the centrepiece races. Two good staying races of note on the Saturday Cheltenham card plus we have Group level action on the flat. Newbury stage a pair of Group Three races plus a Listed whilst the feature at Doncaster is the Group One Futurity. The week closes with the valuable cards from Aintree and Wincanton including the Grade Two Old Roan Chase at the former.

With further jump returners and debuts last week to take full advantage of the softer ground I maintained the selective and educational approach. This year we are seeing completely different conditions than we did at the same stage last year when firm ground delayed the seasonal reappearances of many of the winter horses. Whilst the large influx of returners and debuts makes accurate race evaluation difficult at present, things will settle down over the forthcoming period and I can then start to increase turnover towards another profitable main jumps campaign. Patience and discipline are key factors in a truly professional long term approach.
