The season so far…

‘The main jumps campaign runs the seven months from October through to the end of April. It has been an eventful start in which conditions have been a major player.

We got underway with decent jumping ground in October which produced a flood of the winter types making their seasonal reappearances and respective debuts. After the unsuitably firm going of the previous year it was no surprise that this time connections were very keen to get their better horses on track, ready or not. At the same time we still had the summer jumpers in action, seemingly heading towards a break. A good start to the opening month with plans to steadily increase turnover in the coming weeks.

However as we went into November the weather significantly changed with a prolonged dry spell forecast. The appearance of the winter types dried up as quickly as the ground. Field sizes became embarrassingly low at some tracks. At times you felt as though the cards were from the summer season. There were those calling for radical short term action to produce better jumping ground. To me it was clear that as in betting, patience and discipline allied to a sensible long term approach was the correct course of action. And so it proved as later in the month we did get rain but that also came with frost plus snow for some areas. A frustrating time made more so by a few of our horses, whilst trading extremely low in running, throwing away winning opportunities. By the end of the month the cut in the ground had returned and the season had more normality. A small backward step but still on course as we headed into December.

Measured start to the month as the overall picture began to bring some clarity despite the intervention of Storm Darragh which badly affected those in its path. From mid-month onwards turnover picked up and forward momentum was regained. As we go into the new year the emphasis stays with value led selective professional betting as I work towards another successful main jumps campaign. We have a great deal to look forward to over the coming months.
