A week that progressively gathers pace..

‘Jumps fixtures increase and Champions Day at Ascot are the features of the week ahead. Temperatures for the week are expected to be warmer but with that comes an unsettled weather pattern.

We have twelve jump meetings and the likelihood of even more returners and respective debuts as the main jumps season gathers pace. We start with an extended eight race card at Hereford on Monday. With watered ground on the firmer side of Good the number of returners will be understandably limited and the summer types will form the majority. A situation which will most likely change as the week progresses. Market Rasen race on Tuesday with significant distance increases affecting all races. Present going is Good.

From Wednesday onwards we have two meetings each day along with a gradual rise in prize money and quality. Both Wetherby and Worcester currently have Good to Soft ground which will be of appeal to the seasonal returnees. On Tuesday and Wednesday there is the season opener at Punchestown which will be of future interest.

Carlisle and Wincanton for us on Thursday with some relatively decent prize money on offer. Course changes to note on Friday; at Fakenham they race on the outer most running lines which will increase overall distances and at Uttoxeter they again omit the second last fence due to ground repairs.

Highlight of the week on the flat is on Saturday as Ascot stage Champions Day. The six race card, worth over four million pounds in prize money, contains four Group One races and a Group Two. Jumps action comes from Newton Abbot and Stratford. We round the week off with a valuable card at Kempton along with the Durham National meeting at Sedgefield. There is also a decent weekend jumps fixture at Limerick worth noting.

An educational and selective week just gone. Whilst the recent high level of returners and debuts for the main jumps season makes accurate race evaluation a challenge in the short term, it has provided a good amount of valuable information for the longer term. My long term objective is yet another successful seven month main jumps campaign. With so many unknown factors in play I took a very selective approach last week which produced a smart 3/1 winner who added to the latest overall profits.
