Winter weather for winter horses?

‘Eighteen jumps fixtures again for the week with Ascot and Haydock on Saturday as the premier meetings. The long awaited rain is due to arrive this week which could signal more of the winter types on the various courses.

The mild and very dry conditions that have dominated November have had a profound effect on Monday entries. There are three meetings on offer from Plumpton, Exeter and Leicester. The faster and firmer ground has attracted just twenty-four entries at this stage across the reduced six race card at Plumpton and twenty-seven for the seven races at Exeter. The better jumping ground at Leicester, most notably on the hurdles course, has kept most of the fields relatively stronger for their seven races.

Monday also starts a significant change to the weather pattern with rain, snow and strong winds from the north resulting in a sharp drop in temperature. The two meetings on Tuesday are closely monitoring the change in conditions. Carlisle have already called a morning inspection and will be deploying frost sheets to key areas of the course. Further south at Fakenham a wet night and possible snow flurries are forecast.

Both Ffos Las and Warwick are forecast a good amount of rain in the days leading up to their meetings on Wednesday which has produced a few notable entries from the major yards. At Hexham officials anticipate an inspection on raceday whilst hoping the track will overcome the overnight low temperature with a clear sunny day. Thursday and Friday are expected to have continued calmer cold conditions. We have some decent prize money at Warwick and Wincanton on Thursday. Catterick, Chepstow and the first day of a valuable November two day meeting at Ascot on Friday.

After a few days of those calmer conditions an unsettled weather pattern is forecast to sweep across the country on Saturday which will affect all three jump meetings. The Ascot card features both a Grade Two Chase and Hurdle and at Haydock the meeting opens with a Grade Two Hurdle and the biggest race of the day, the Grade One Betfair Chase. At the lower end of the scale we also have a seven race card from Huntingdon.

On Sunday Exeter will be hoping that their good money card will prove far more attractive than the one on Monday and Uttoxeter race again after last Saturday’s meeting. We also have a high class Punchestown fixture well worth keeping a close watch on over the weekend.

With such a variable weather forecast for the coming week the overall effect cannot be reasonably assessed at present. We have courses who have had little or no proper rainfall for weeks suddenly being deluged. Those who called for radical short term solutions to the firmer ground can see why the level-headed long term approach is essential. We have groundstaff across the country with the expertise and experience to deal with all manner of adverse conditions.’
