Eyes on Kempton

Two jumps meetings for us this afternoon and a significant difference in going conditions between the two. At Bangor it is Heavy whilst at Kempton we have Good to Soft going. Two races for us to look at from the southern track.

 2.10 Kempton

My initial thought was to try and oppose market leader Get On The Yager.

However half the field look to have little chance, and the four that are left will need to show marked improvement to beat an in form favourite.

I have provisionally priced as follows:

 Get On The Yager  5/4

Peak To  Peak  5/1

Agamemmon   5/1

Ballymountain Boy 6/1

Silent Steps 12/1

Kempton Park racecourse

2.40 Kempton

Little to choose between the form horses.

Savoy Court is worth keeping a close eye on.

He disappointed on hurdles debut when a short priced favourite.

His bumper win last season at Ffos Las was decent form. He defeated Tommy Rapper who ran a creditable third yesterday in a race where we again successfully laid the odds-on favourite.

Tricky race to price up accurately, I would provisionally go 3/1 the field.

Denman and Kauto Star locked together. Denman Chase tomorrow at Newbury.

Plenty for us to go at tomorrow with the two Grade 2 races at Newbury the highlight.

Payback time?

The seven race card from Sandown is our focus today. A mixed going report with the ground reported as Soft (Heavy in places) on the chase course and Heavy (Soft on back straight) for the hurdlers. Fascinating day and we are looking at the opening two races.

12.40 Sandown Betfred “Home Of Goals Galore” Novices´ Hurdle (CLASS 3)

Coeur De Lion has course & distance form and is preferred over Rather Be. The latter giving a stone to his younger rival.

I go:

Coeur De Lion 5/4

Rather Be 7/4

12/1 bar

A few of the books have Rather Be as their current favourite. It will be interesting to see how the market develops.

Couer De Lion

1.15 Sandown Betfred “Treble Odds On Lucky 15´s” Handicap Chase (CLASS 2)

Just  the seven declared but this is a wide open handicap. My preferred two are Bright New Dawn and Grey Gold.

Bright New Dawn was noted when finishing behind Bold Henry over C&D last month.

That was his first start for current stable who paid £56,000 for him at Goff’s September sales last year. Venetia Williams has saddled the winner of this race for the past two years.

The softer the ground the better for the veteran 12y.o. Grey Gold, who looks sure to figure at the finish.

I go 4/1 the field on my private tissue.

Bright New Dawn

I am close to finalising plans for my annual Cheltenham Festival preview which raises funds for the Lambourn stable staff. You can keep in touch with this and all my work via the new app. Download  at:  stevelewishamilton.appsme.com

Winning return for Nico?

With the abandonment of Chepstow yesterday, we are left with the one jumps meeting at Catterick. The going at the North Yorkshire track is Soft and Good to Soft in places. A dry day with light winds is forecast.

Two races to quickly look at:

 1.15

Pam Sly sends Walsingham Grange north and he sets the form standard.

Conditions are fine for him and I expect a prominent ride from Kielan Woods.

5/4 on my tissue which is just about in line with the market.

Pam Sly

3.20

Treaty Girl jumps well, with latest second at Newbury on new year’s eve giving her a solid chance here.

Jockey Nico de Bonville takes the ride after a three month absence following a broken arm sustained at Cheltenham. I make Treaty Girl 9/4 to provide him with a comeback winner.

Treaty Girl

Plenty to go at tomorrow with cards from Sandown, Wetherby and Musselburgh.

What a day!

What a great day of racing we have ahead of us and there will be plenty to go at.

The freezing conditions of the week have given way to widespread rain as the temperature inches slightly upwards. With it has brought a disparity of going across the three jump meetings this afternoon. As we head northwards, Cheltenham is now Soft, Uttoxeter Heavy on the chase curse and Soft /Heavy for the hurdlers and Doncaster Good which could ease as the forecast rain penetrates.

We are going to quickly look at two races from Cheltenham.

12.00 Cheltenham JCB Triumph Trial Juvenile Hurdle (Grade 2)

Both Charli Parcs and Defi Du Seuil have impressed.

Defi Du Seuil boasts the more solid form and is preferred.

My tissue:

Defi Du Seuil  evens

Charli Parcs 11/8

Defi Du Seuil

2.15 Cheltenham BetBright Trial Cotswold Chase (Grade 2)

Smad Place is expected to give Thistlecrack a race.

I go:

Thistlecrack 8/11

Smad Place 5/1

Smad Place

Apologies for the brevity but it is a very busy day of racing with nine races at Cheltenham alone. There is a lot to finalise before I brief my select group of clients at 11.45.

Our good week continued yesterday with another successful lay of a short priced favourite making it three profitable bets from the four advised. For more details about my work, go to: www.slh.co.uk

Harri up

Just the two meetings remain after the abandonment of Huntingdon. One race apiece from Doncaster and Taunton to look at. The going at both is Good.

 1.55 Doncaster

Both Fort Worth and Henllan Harri are handicapped to go well.

Paddy’s Field has disappointed this season and has to prove he stays.

Behind The Wire jumped well when winning at Taunton and is progressive.

I price the market leaders as follows:

Behind The Wire  2/1

Henllan Harri  5/2

Forth Worth 7/2

Paddy’s Field 10/1

Henllan Harri

Taunton 2.45

Difficult to evaluate the odds-on favourite Dolos.

Both The Unit and Air Horse One have a good level of form.

I would be wary of Dolos at the current short odds. 6/4 on my tissue.

Taunton Racecourse

Good 5/2 winner for us from our only bet yesterday, our strongest of the week so far.

No joke

With Ascot and Taunton both falling prey to the cold weather we are left with one turf meeting today at Haydock. It is a classy card containing four Group 2 races. We are going to look at one of them plus a competitive handicap.

Clerk of the course Kirkland Tellwright reported: “Temperatures were -1C and we wouldn’t have wanted any more frost. We’ve been dry since Wednesday, the sun is out and it’s set to a bright, dry day. The ground is soft and it’s not going to be as testing as your traditional Haydock in January.”

3.15 Peter Marsh Handicap Chase (A Limited Handicap) (Grade 2)

A reasonably case can be made for 10 of the 14 runners.

Difficult to price with the form of ex French trained Alary difficult to evaluate in the context of today’s race.

Definitly Red put up his best performance when winning at Wetherby on Boxing Day.

However that form line also puts Bristol De Mai, Otago Trail and Bishops Road in the mix.

I’m 11/2 the field on my provisional tissue.

Bishops Road can go well at double figure odds.

Bristol De Mai

3.50 Racing UK Club Day Today Handicap Chase (CLASS 3)

Trip could be too short for the returning Wuff who has been out for a year.

Back By Midnight needs to sharpen up his jumping.

Ubaltique is handicapped to go close, but finds little for pressure.

Pistol Park is improving but is priced accordingly.

Imjoeking is my e/w preference at 7/1+. His latest run is solid form and conditions are fine.

Imjoeking

The major festival meetings in Britain and Ireland are getting closer. Special terms now available for the rest of the jumps campaign and longer term. For details go to: www.slh.co.uk

8 in a row

A quick look at two races from Musselburgh today, who report their going as Good.

1.50

Verona Opera is thoroughly exposed though just sets the form standard.

Appy Days was eased when beaten on latest start and is expected to improve.

I provisionally go:

Appy Days   6/4

Verona Opera 3/1

Overawed  6/1

10/1 bar

Musselburgh racecourse

2.25

Tightly knit handicap in which my prices markedly differ from those on offer:

Eyes Of A Tiger 5/1

Jonny Delta 5/1

Project Bluebook 5/1

Stamp Your Feet 5/1

10/1 bar

One who will know his way round the course is the Jim Goldie trained Jonny Delta. He runs at Musselburgh for the eighth consecutive time today.

Jim Goldie

Decent week for us so far with the highlight being a good 9/2 winner at Newbury.

For more details about my work go to: www.slh.co.uk

Back tomorrow when we have two excellent meetings from Ascot and Haydock.

Lanzarote outsiders

After the extremes of yesterday we have a full complement of fixtures today. Concentrating on two races from Kempton this afternoon. The going is Good to Soft and a cloudy dry day is forecast.

2.40 32Red Lanzarote Handicap Hurdle (Listed Race)

The race is named after the 1974 Champion Hurdle winner.

Wide open handicap with a couple of unknown quantities making it difficult to price with confidence.

Will O’the West and Templeross are worth considering at big odds. Currently priced at around 16/1 and bigger.

Both disappointed on latest starts after showing up well previously.

I have received favourable reports regarding both.

Templeross

3.15 32Red.com Handicap Chase (CLASS 2)

Kruzhlinin won over hurdles on latest start and is still on a workable mark returning to fences. He attempts to follow up last year’s win in this race.

Abricot De L’Oasis also returns to chasing from hurdles on a fair mark, though is not proven at the trip.

No Duffer and Sandy Beach are in form but need to progress.

My tissue:

Kruzhlinin 4/1

Sandy Beach  5/1

Abricot De L’Oasis   6/1

No Duffer 7/1

Our Kaempfer 8/1

10/1 bar

Kruzhlinin

We are roughly at the half way point of the main jumps season and special membership terms are available to take you through to the end of the season.

They include the rest of this month free, plus an extra discount.  For more details go to: http://www.slh.co.uk/201617-jumps-campaign/

Huntingdon braves the weather

With Sedgefield abandoned we are left with just the one turf meeting at Huntingdon today. The going is currently Good to Soft and the big factor will be the strong winds expected to sweep across the course. Riding expertise will play a large part.

There are already quite a few non-runners  and that may increase if there are difficulties reaching the course and conditions get worse.

Two races to focus on:

 2.20

Very open race despite the three non-runners already declared.

Midnight Folie could be well handicapped and is worth keeping an eye on, but has to prove she handles ground and stays trip.

Water Wagtail is more exposed, but handles conditions and is expected to run well.

I price the market leaders as follows:

 Water Wagtail  4/1

Northandsouth  5/1

Wait a Second  11/2

Midnight Folie 11/2

The Jugopolist   8/1

14/1 bar

Huntingdon races2.50 Hunt

Difficult race to be confident about with ex French trained Divin Bere having first start for Nicky Henderson.

Master Blueyes was noted on latest start and is not one I would oppose.

I go 5/4 the pair.

Prospects for tomorrow look a lot brighter when we have three jumps meetings to go at.

Fascinating but no value

Fascinating day of racing. However, there is little value to be had. For me it will be mainly a watching brief today. As a professional, there is no point in having bets just for the sake of it. There will be better opportunities along the way.

Quick look at two races from Ascot.

1.15:

My prices for the top three

Top Notch 1/1

Hammersly Lake 4/1

Caid Du Berlais 4/1

Top Notch is the best horse, has to prove he gets the trip.

Top Notch (near side)
Top Notch (near side)

2.25:

Loath to oppose Unowhatimeanharry. Deserves to be at short odds.

French raider Alex De Larredya looked a classy prospect on last outing.

Will be back  for our final blog of the year on boxing day.

Hope you have a good Christmas.
